I know that this is late in coming but I haven’t been all that excited about the most recent installment of the American Cup. My husband got home just as the last 5 minutes were rolling and asked excitedly, “So, how was it?!” And I just kind of shrugged and said “eh.” While there were a few highlights, I did not find the competition terribly stimulating. It felt like an exhibition with 4 American Women and The Paul Hamm Show on the side. That being said, here are a few of my (admittedly unenthusiastic) thoughts…
- Nastia’s new Beam routine is beautiful. I liked everything about it. She changed her leap combos and removed the wolf jump, which I’ve blogged about before. She took out the whip back at the end of her bhs layout step out combo, which allows her form and amplitude on the layout to be more fully appreciated. I dig her new move - it’s basically a Portocarrero to a stand position, ending in a scale. It’s original and looks cool. Her switch ring leap is the best in the business. She actually lands it without the deep bent knee that we see from most other women on this skill. Well done.
- Like many others out there, I was definitely impressed with Sam Peszek. She rocked her Beam set and was solid elsewhere. I didn’t expect to see her perform so well.
- Shawn Johnson looked great, as usual. Some have said that she seemed to lack her usual spunk but I didn’t think so. She fell on her Amanar. No big deal. And like Dwight Normile points out in his most recent Stretching Out section on International Gymnast website, maybe her second place finish was a blessing in disguise. It probably did take some pressure off of her. She’ll be back, no doubt.
- Speaking of Shawn Johnson, she still does not lift her head on any of her Beam choreography. That bothers me. And I really wish she would get a new Floor routine. One of the most exciting parts of the Olympic year is to see the new floor routines that everyone debuts for the big year. Seems like the reigning World All Around Champion should have something new. There’s still time, I suppose. I’m hoping she’ll unveil something new at Nationals. We’ll see.
- Speaking of Floor routines, I think Nastia should go back to using her 2005 music if she’s not going to be getting a new floor routine either. She is an unbelievably beautiful dancer and her tumbling looked pretty strong in New York. But her current music kind of drags. I feel like it makes her look tired out there. Let’s compare the two. Tell me which one you prefer.
2005 World Championships Event Finals
2008 American Cup
- I was disappointed to see Shayla Worley struggle at the Garden. I wanted to see her challenge Liukin and Johnson. Everyone has an off day. She’ll be back stronger than ever.
- On the Men’s side of things, I was hoping Raj Bhavsar would end up closer to the top.
- Paul Hamm looked good. Does anyone else think it should at least be a little bit harder for the guy to come back to competition after a 2+ year hiatus? Seems too easy. I hope somebody can give him a run for his money at Nationals.
And that’s about it. I really can’t say much about the international competitors since we didn’t get to see them, except on Floor for the Women and a few random sightings for the Men. The American Cup seems to be hyped more and more every year* but ends up disappointing me more and more every year. What did you all think about the competition?
*How many times can we hear about how prestigious the event is and how this is the first step to the Olympics?

Nastia’s old routine is better. BY FAR. I’m kinda scared for Shayla, she’s been so inconsistent lately at all the meets (Nats, Worlds, SCAM), I’m worried it’s hurting her chances for the team. But we need someone like her. There’s a rumor going around the igmessage board that Shawn had a new routine but Marta didn’t like it so she’s still using the old one. Why does Marta have to approve everything??? Grrr…
March 14th, 2008 at 11:57 am
I had heard that Shayla’s coach wanted to pull her out of the competition due to injury but that Marta wouldn’t let her not compete so she wasn’t 100%. Marta will know that though so perhaps it won’t hurt her chances too much.

i really wish we could have seen more variety among the cometitors. even amoung the americans there were favorites. i am very glad they showed some of Rajs routine, i wish they would have shown his rings though. the girl from germany (even though we only saw her once) looked very good. and i really wish shawn and nastia would have new fx routines….

sorry i meant competitors

It looked like a glorified practice session for the American women. I was impressed with the routines of though — especially Peszek. Can’t wait to see her beam routine with the Patterson dismount. I agree about the same old routines though. Would be nice to see something new unveiled for the olympic year.
Can someone explain to me the a-score on bars. Nastia’s was a 7.5 and Worley’s only a 6.7? Is that right? Is she capable of that much greater difficulty than all of the other competitors? It’s easy to understand on vault where Shawn Johnson’s a-score was a 6.5 for a 2.5 twisting yurchenko vs. Liukin’s 5.5 for a 1.5 yurchenko. That’s one skill vs. another skill, but in the bar routines it just seems like why not keep throwing in every trick in the kitchen sink until it adds up to a nice high a-score. And if that is the case, then why aren’t more gymnasts throwing in the kitchen sink?
March 17th, 2008 at 9:41 am
Part of the ‘A’ score “problem” (if it really is one) is that the gymnasts are limited to their 10 hardest elements… you can’t just keep throwing more and more moves (the “kitchen sink,” so to speak), you have to throw 10 HARDER moves. Nastia, with the incredible variety of stoops, Ono’s, 1-1/2 twisting giants etc maximizes the non-release portion of her 10 elements, counting more E and D elements thna anyone, with the 2 possible exceptions of the tiny Russian World Champ, and the Chinese girl who just won the World Cup in Doha, who does virtually the same ‘A’ level difficulty, with BETTER form! (sorry, the names have slipped my mind)
The Olympic bars finals (barring a surprise fall from one of the top contenders in qualifying) is going to be great, though likely only 3 - 5 girls have a realistic chance to win.
Despite her excellence on bars, Nastia is NOT a lock for the gold yet, though I wish her the best.

Thanks for the explanation. I looked up the Chinese gymnast you were referring to in you post: He Kexin. Here’s a link to her routine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpMrbdVDB5I
Her routine combines great difficulty with elegant execution and originality. I’ve never seen that combo of release moves (straddle jaeger 1/2 twist, mixed grip catch immediately into another straddle jaeger). Also her layed out jaeger was gorgeous. The only thing this lacked was a good dismount.

Nastia has beautiful form, but also has a habit of really working the code for every scrap of a point rather than working towards doing real stunning gymnastics. (Just look at floor where she does not even have a single double back style skill…and woiuld struggle on them.) On bars, she works all the phurouettes so mychm, but I thiunk in the end that the releases should get more credit with their stunning crowd appeal and with the risk of a fall.
March 17th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
so everyone works the code to their own advantage, why is nastia any different?
March 17th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
on the nastia front, i actually LIKED her 2006-present routine before this whole foot fiasco, in 2006 it was a beautiful routine, ever since 2007 nationals-present it looks rushed and painful.
nastia REALLY works that code, but i think thats a pretty good quality to have. for example on floor all of her tumbling (except 2nd and last pass) is combination tumbling. if you look at shawns its 1 high flying trick after another, but not necessarily in combination. nastia works the code to get not only value of skill, but combination bonus. it kind of reminds me of 1996-2000 quad of romanian gymnast, especially on bars. i like the composition of her floor routine as it is. i wish more people would see the difficulty in it.. everyone says that shawns is so much harder because of her high flying tricks, but in reality nastia is .1 behind her in A score.
anyways… i really hope shayla can get back on her high horse soon, man im really pulling for her for a spot on the team, but she keeps falling randomly. i actually get super nervous these days when i watch her, and it never used to be like that. but apparently she’s basically a lock (if she stays healthy) because we have literally NO DEPTH on bars. we have nastia… and it ends there. it goes from nastias mid 16 score, down to shayla’s mid 15 score. compare that with beam where all of the three from worlds (if they would have hit in team finals… god they gave me a scare) scored high 15s or 16s.

I have to say that I’m more of a fan of the “take your breath away” gymnastics, which to me usually involves the “high flying” tricks and big release moves. I think women’s gymnastics is constantly working toward a balance of grace & beauty & artistry that Nastia exemplifies vs. the speed, power, and strength that Shawn exemplifies. To me the best gymnast is usually right in the middle of those two qualities — which is why the Chinese gymnasts are going to be tough to beat this year. Beijing should be a great competition, and I’m looking forward to it.

Regarding the “high flying” release skills, vs. the pirouetting skills, especially to the level and quality that Nastia does them, I can tell you as a coach, and a (admittedly not very good) gymnast, the pirouettes are WAY harder, which is why EVERYONE does major releases, and so few do the intricate turns, which, BTW, in the code, are worth the same or more than the releases, which even some level 9s are doing now… NO level 9 does a Takemoto, an Ono, a giant 1-1/2 etc…
I love and appreciate the huge releases and tumbling skills as much as the next coach, but I also admire the patience and amazing precision required to do the skills like Nastia, He Kexin and the like…
Should be a great bar finals!

I don’t really have anything to say about the american cup cause i didnt watch it cause i was stuck at a track meet all day. but i wanted to tell you how awesome this blog is. ive been searching for gymnastics and track blogs for like EVER and this one is by far the best. it must be your background in calligraphy that makes the aesthetic so streamlined and crisp- not to mention the insight is superb and on point.

yah this blog is way WAY better than that stupid chalk bucket one. and i agree with liv, shayla was injured i think her ankle was taped. allot. and yah i do thik shawn was getting a new routine… floor? shes had hers since begining of 2006.. its about time she get a new one. i think shawn is not so serious about continuing (sorry spelling)after 2008. in an interview she mentioned she wanted to do a high school sport.

I think that sam and shyla should have more tv time. especially sam she gets a 15.150 on vault and a 15.4 on unevens and they don’t show her till halfway through the competition!
May 9th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
and dont forget sami got a 16.100 on beam *with out* the double arabian…… di rebecca bros take out her double arabian from 2006 (BB)
May 12th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
Did you know that Nastia is training a double twist!!!!!!!!!!!!
Finally!!!!!
Also Shayla said she would deveau a double twist here but probably changed it because of her ankle……….
May 13th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
i think she should choose not to compete it…. after all consistencyis the key especially in the *olympic* year. i dont get why her vault score at pacific rim was lower than her vault score at tyson am. cup WITH THE STEP OUT OF BOUNDS!!! i cant beleive it… she was quicker cleaner and a whole heck of a lot better especially with that stick!
May 23rd, 2008 at 4:40 pm
But Nastia really needs the 2 twists! If she doesn’t than she’ll automatically start 1point lower than Barbosa and Johnson and face it.. They do the 2.5 really well!
These are all the gymnasts that are in contention to make the team (though some aren’t going to make it anyway) Make sure you watch a routine from the ones on top not the ones on bottom
Nastia Liukin

May 29th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
the purpose is to try…. to let themselves know that they have a chane… if your competing then you have a change just because your cometing. but it doesnt guarentee youll be in the top 12 or top 2
