Spoiler Alert! This post contains information and plot details about the movie, Stick It!
Let me start by saying that my expectations going in to the film were low. Very low. But being the true gymnastics fan that I am I dragged my husband to opening night last Friday and worried that I would never live it down. The reviews weren’t stellar and let’s face it - “tween” movies can be so bad. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the theatre was packed. True, it was packed primarily with girls aged 8-15 but still not a bad sign. As the previews winded down, I found myself giddy with excitement. This was it! The movie that the gymnastics world has flipped for (pun intended) over the last couple years. The movie that made it onto the cover of International Gymnast was finally here. And, surprisingly, I liked it. I really did. And even more amazing, my husband liked it. If that’s not a recommendation to see the film, I don’t know what is.
Here are my top ten thoughts on the movie, in no particular order…
- It was funny! I laughed out loud several times. In particular the boys cracked me up. My husband and I have been quoting the movie since we left the theater. Not the overdone ones like the “gym-nice-stics” quote but ones like “when is it bad to be whipped? Ever?” I really thought that the comedy effort would fall flat but it had a slightly Napolean Dynamite flair to it. Not bad.
- The movie put a new spin on the typical gymnastics footage. I will admit that I was at first a bit disappointed by the lack of true gymnastics sequences. I was expecting something more like American Anthem, which despite what any movie critic says, was an incredible movie! American Anthem, which I own, of course, showed gymnastics footage much like a televised gymnastics meet. Not so with Stick It! but what writer/producer Jessica Bendinger did with the gymnastics footage was so unique. I think that it made the movie much more interesting to watch for those viewers who are not die hard gymnastics fans. My husband thought it was very cool, with bit of a Run, Lola, Run aura about it. Fascinating.
- Many folks are touting this movie as one that sheds light on the life of elite gymnasts. I did not find this to be the case. The gym (Vickerman Gymnastics Academy) was sterile and lifeless. The only gymnasts you ever saw were the elite athletes. Gyms don’t make any money off the elite gymnasts. The money comes from the rec classes. Where was everybody else? And the practice sessions didn’t seem realistic. Elite practice can be brutal. Besides that nasty crash from the Beam (seriously, what in the world was that gal doing? A front aerial? Tucked? Half straddled?), the viewers rarely got a glimpse of what an elite gymnastics practice is like. Bits and pieces were there but as a whole, I don’t think it was as enlightening as it was advertised to be.
- While the fake phone talking was brilliant (how funny were Mina and Wei Wei?), who on earth would do a round-off double back off the beam in street clothes and shoes? Honestly. A pair of loose Airwalks? And after two years off? I don’t think so.
- I liked Jeff Bridges’ character as the head coach but I’m not sure what Bendinger was going for with him being money-hungry. It made me unsure of his integrity. I think that she was showing that he was only human but I don’t know if it worked. Still, I liked him.
- It was interesting to see some themes that have actually played out in real life. Aka - Shannon Miller walking out of the World Championships in 1994. Aka - Bela Karolyi’s athletes (think Hillary Grivich at the 1992 US Olympic Trials) being unfairly judged due to the fact that he was their coach.
- Though the actresses had incredible stunt doubles (you could hardly tell the difference between Missy Peregrym and Isabelle Severino), you could still tell that most were not true gymnasts by their salutes. I could see a distinct difference between the salute of Peregrym and that of Maddy Curley, who is a former gymnast. It’s all in the salute.
- The VGA competition leotards missed the mark. What was up with those random leos? I could probably get on board with the patterns (I’m sure we’ll see some that are similar at US Nationals this summer) but the cuts were outdated. I wore a leotard with that cut in 1987. Seriously.
- Although I am no longer a coach and I’ve never owned a gym, I know that the instructor at my safety certification course a few years ago would have a stroke if she knew that Haley Graham was working out all by herself with no coach! Does USAG Safety Certification mean anything anymore?
- I know that Missy Peregrym worked her tail off to get into gymnastics shape for this movie but there was one thing that she really needed to do to look the part of a gymnast. Shrink. She’s almost 5′8″! Even Svetlana Khorkina doesn’t come close to that. But that was really the only part that wasn’t believable about her. I am so impressed with all the work she and Vanessa Lengies did to get into gymnastics shape for their roles. Well done.
So there you have it. I liked Stick It! For a tween gymnastics comedy/satire I give it an B+. What did you think? Do you agree? Post your thoughts in the comment section.

As a GymMom of 12 years, I was as excited about the movie as my youngest dd, 11yo Level 8 gymnast. There were many things I liked about it…..the decision of the girls to take matters out of the judges hands was so awesome! I liked the characters of the gymnasts and the boys. I felt like the coach was a shell of a coach. He wasn’t believeable to me. But I liked him as a person in the movie. Personally, I would have liked to see more “gym meet” style footage but I think you are correct that the artistic filming was helpful in reaching viewers who didn’t know as much about the sport.
There were so many fun things to copy in this film. “Call Me….Stalk You” is classic. “I have a feeling something bad is getting ready to happen” from the boy in the truck. And my favorite one liner of the whole movie was during the final meet when Nastia was on bars and Haley said, “I’m so glad we picked her”. LOL!
As for my dd…..the thing she liked best about the movie was that Nastia actually had a real part in it. That was a surprise to her.
Do you think there will be a Stick It 2?

Sherri,
I agree with you about Coach Vickerman. As I mentioned above, I liked him in the movie but I agree that his role wasn’t quite believable as a coach. Not because of his acting but the role itself, I think.
I also enjoyed the one liners you mentioned. The “call me…stalk you” line has been used in my house on more than one occasion already!
Will we see a Stick It 2? Hard to say but it’s not totally out of the realm of possibility. We had Bring It On and Bring It On Again, but Jessica Bendinger only worked on Bring It On. She did not do the sequel, if my information is correct. So maybe we’ll see a Stick It! sequel from another writer/director. Time will tell

I didn’t remember Shannon walking out of worlds, what was that all about?
I really thought it was inaccurate that a coach who had a motto about safe routines would let a gymnast practice by herself…and that he wouldn’t freak out when his gymnasts decided to compete a bunch of new skills that weren’t competition ready. Or that none of the coachs at Nats didn’t scream at thier gymnasts for throwing the meet. Yeah it was EF’s but still.
And where was the Marta Clone?!

At the 1994 Team World Championships, Shannon Miller left the competition after the compulsory round. She made a mistake in her compulsory bar set and it was scored way too high. Her feet slipped on her toe-front half dismount and she had to re-kip, cast, giant, and dismount. She still scored a 9.525. Coaches from other countries protested the score and the crowd bowed and jeered the American Team.
Shannon and coach, Steve Nunno, decided to leave Dortmund after the compulsories and the decision to do so was quite the controversy. The other American coaches were vocal in their dismay at the decision. Nunno & Miller maintained that leaving had been an option for them from the beginning. Regardless, the remaining team members (Amanda Borden, Amy Chow, Jaycie Phelps, Larissa Fontaine, Kerri Strug & Dominique Dawes) recovered from a disasterous second round sans Shannon to put in an incredible performance in the finals and earn the silver medal.

I LOVED STICK IT! my whole team (gymastics,of course)went to see the movie together(coaches, too)and we all loved it.i especially liked when the girls were talking on their hand “phones” on beam.that’s how my gym friends talk to each other now.(and coaches on some occasions)
P.S. and,now if i ever have/want to scratch an event,i’ll have some creative ways to do it!

Can you sign my child up for Gymnastics?

I honestly did not get a chance to see the movie, because as a gymnast I train many hours a week and do not have much time to see movies during the school year, and it was out of theaters near me by the time finals were over (school finals, not gymnastics. but i found this slightly ironic, because some of my closest gymnastics friends didnt get to see it either because they also didn’t have time, and this is consistent with one of the movie themes (or at least it seems so from the video clips) that gymnasts are too busy to do anything else. I just found that interesting.

I love the movie! I have it on dvd now and the bonus material is hysterical. That movie is so good for gymnastics quotes its not even funny. Some of my favorite quotes include “Who died and made you Nadia?” “Yeah, You’ve got a lot of people going to the Olympics. I’m just wondering what country are they gonna represent, the state of delusion?” and my absolute favorite, its one of the deleted scenes, and Haley says “This is totally leotardic.” when the rhythmics are in the going crazy in the gym that she trains in for some random reason. In the beginning of the scene she’s talking about the rhythmics and says, “Every freak has their freak. I mean while gymnasts are freaks, rhythmic gymnasts are like our circus freaks. They’re freaktastic….” and then it cuts to the part where Joane is saying “What does drunk driving have to do with school?” and Ivan comes in and says, “The rhythmics are going peanuts” and it cuts to this scene where the rhythmics are throwing all their apparatus at each other! And Vic tries to break them up and Haley and Mina are talking and Mina says how its insane whats going on with the rhythmics and and thats when Haley says the leotardic statement. Thats my favorite saying now. It’s too bad it wasn’t actually in the movie. And now that I’ve sufficiently ranted about that, here’s for my question: I thought Shannon won back to back world titles, so if she walked out how did she get to the all around to win? I don’t really remember it because I was like 8 then so I don’t really remember anything in gymnastics much before 96 and the mag 7 even though I’m sure I watched it because I watched everything I could from the time I was 6 during the 92 games. Anyway just a thought.

In 1994 there were two World Championships. One in the Spring with the All Around and Event Finals contested, where Shannon took the All Around title for the second year in a row. In the Fall, there was a seperate World Championships with a Team Competition only.

Hey I adored this movie and shamfully admitt that I never got to see it in Theters. Anyway, I was reading some of the comments above and I have a question.
March 9th, 2007 at 3:37 pm
Hey, I loved the movie it was great. I never saw it in theters ethier and I really regret it. I to was reading the articles above and have a question.
If you all loved the movie so God Damn much why are you complaining about it? I mean who cares if the combinations weren’t real, or their was a slight difference between the stunt dubbles, or that one girl was unrealisticly tall. If you love the movie and are always quoting lines which is really childish by the way, then dont talk about the flaws see it in a good light not a bad one.
Oh and for what its worth there will be a sequel I happen to have a Friend Of A Friend who knows there will be. So be patient!

I have to say I love the movie stick it. I’m actually watching it right now.
I hated how at the begining Frank and Poot are argueing over Hailey’s affection but at the end, Poot is all over Joanne and Frank is more hanging out with Mina.
I hope they do end up having a sequil to this or atleast some sites or fan fics start up about this movie. I really want a second one cuz it would help develup the characters more. If they end up having a sequil I hope it doesn’t turn out like the bring it on series where each movie they had new characters. they would have been better if they followed the same characters, atleast for 1 & 2.
I hated that Hailey compleately did a 180 in this movie. She is a tomboy at the begining but by the end she’s just like the others just a little more rebelious.
But I love Frank and Poot. Even when they weren’t up close they still knew how Hailey was fealing and was there for her.
oh and someone on IMDB posted this on the board so I thought that I’d share.
In the begining when Hailey is about to do the Jump against Stussy Frank Calls Hailey Cracker. Poot Says “Go GC”. At first I just thought the name Cracker was just a nick name since they said it so much, And I didn’t think about the GC. But the thing is Hailey’s Last name is Grahm and they call her cracker… Grahm Cracker = GC… thats why they called her Cracker all throughout the movie

Hey, I know some of the posts are old, but with Shannon at Worlds, if you read her mom’s book, it clears it up a bit. Shannon was overworked that year, as Steve put her in every meet possible, including small meets mostly consisting of juniors, where Dawes, Borden and the rest of the 94 team didn’t go to half the meets she did. She wanted to skip the team champs altogher, it was USA Gymnastics that insisted she could just do compulsories. Shannon didn’t know Steve didn’t tell the other coaches, so it made her look bad when it was all the coach.
March 12th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
i really loved this movie! Hailey advice about picturing the judges doing what we do really does help you nerves during meets it has been working for me for about a year now. it awesome really fun to watch a movie about someone who loves gymanstics as much as you do!
June 28th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
I loved this movie!! I never really did think bout the whole double off the beam in shoes. I think I would have done, but that’s just me. Also, I did wonder about her training herself. Now, I’m only 13 but I’m level 8 and it gets harsh. I spend about 10 hours a day in the gym during the summer. I would NEVER even DREAM of trying to train myself with no one else there. But the only other thing was that they did exercizes that i did as a level 4 or 5 and said that it was so amazingly hard. Maybe to some, but not elites!! Other than that, it was a great movie!!!!
